Forestry on Kangaroo Island, South Australia
Kangaroo Island has long been regarded as the best kept secret in Australia as far as tourism goes, but not many people realise that forestry has been gaining momentum on this South Australian Island.
Kangaroo Island is 155 km long by 55 km wide and is the third largest island off the coast of mainland Australia. The rainfall on Kangaroo Island lends itself well to plantation forestry.
Most recently, investment companies have been establishing approx 1000 ha per year of Eucalypt. The long term goal is to increase this to 2000 ha per year. Another part of this long term plan is to recommission a deep water port on the island which was formerly used by CSR for shipping gypsum from the island. This whole project will not only assist with plantation timber but will also assist the local farming community with cheaper freight rates.
